Chemical peels are advanced professional treatments designed to improve skin texture, tone, and overall appearance. They use chemical solutions to exfoliate the skin, aid in the removal of dead cells and stimulate the production of new, healthier skin.

Types of Chemical Peels:

Superficial Peels are mild peels that target the outer layer of the skin (epidermis). They use ingredients like alpha-hydroxy acids (AHAs) or beta-hydroxy acids (BHAs) which are suitable for treating minor skin concerns like dullness or uneven texture.

Medium Peels penetrate deeper into the skin, reaching the middle layers (dermis). They often use trichloroacetic acid (TCA) and are used to address more significant issues like sun damage, fine lines, and age spots.

Deep Peels go even deeper into the dermis and are used for more severe skin concerns. They usually contain phenol or high concentrations of TCA and can provide dramatic results, though they require longer recovery times.

Common Ingredients found in Chemical Peels

    • Salicylic Acid: A BHA that helps with acne and exfoliates the skin.
    • Glycolic Acid: An AHA that helps with fine lines and hyperpigmentation.
    • Lactic Acid: An AHA known for its gentle exfoliation and hydration.
    • TCA: Used for medium to deep peels, effective for more significant skin issues.

The benefits to having a chemical peel will help with overall health of the skin. They help smooth out rough patches and fine lines , even out the skin surface, and also reduce hyperpigmentation while brightening the complexion. Some peels can also help with acne-prone skin by unclogging pores and reducing breakouts.

There are many things to consider before booking your chemical peel. Recovery time vary based on the peel’s depth. Superficial peels may require minimal downtime, while medium to deep peels may need more down time as they may cause peeling of the skin that can happen over the span of 3-4 days. After a peel, your skin will be more sensitive to the sun, so it’s crucial to use sunscreen. This is why peels tend to be performed most commonly in the fall and winter months when people are less likely to be in the sun. The suitability of a chemical peel can depend on your skin type and concerns. Consulting with a skincare professional is essential to choose the right type for your needs.

    Treatment

    The treatment generally involves:

    1. Cleansing: Removing makeup and impurities from the skin.
    2. Application: Applying the chemical solution to the skin. Peels can be applied in 1 – 4 layers depending on the type of peel.
    3. Neutralization: Sometimes the solution is neutralized, depending on the type of peel.
    4. Post-Treatment Care: Follow-up care instructions to ensure proper healing and optimal results.
